ServerScan Help - RKF Security

Overview - ServerScan Help Index - ServerScan Download
RKF Security and how to best use it with your Clan.

RKF Security The Different Options
You have three options with regard to securing your RKF's. These are no security (not recommended), password based and URL authentication using htaccess / htpasswd technology. See below for more information on the set-up as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

Security Method Set-up / Advantages / Disadvantages
No Security (RKF Security Disabled) Untick the 'RKF Security Enabled' check box.

Very easy to manage of course but means that anyone that gets hold of your RKF can gain access to your server's RCON.
Password Based Tick 'RKF Security Enabled' and select option 'Protect With Password'.

Provides a better solution to keep your RKF safe however if a Clan Member leaves your Clan you must re-issue your RKF's again with a new password after you have changed the servers RCON password too. Can be a bit of a headache if you have a high Membership turnaround.
URL Authentication using htaccess / htpasswd technology

Tick 'RKF Security Enabled' and select option 'Protect Using htaccess'. Enter the URL of the secured webspace in the 'Authorisation URL' box and the URL to the webpage that details how a Clan Member goes about getting his / her username added to the secure webspace area in the 'New Member Registration URL'.

This method is very secure. You can add / remove users from a central point thus negating the need to re-issue your RKF's if a Clan Member leaves. Harder to set-up and if the webserver is down the RKF cannot be loaded. Although if you use a premium hosting service the chances of it being down is very rare. The Tatakai clan use 1and1 for all our hosting needs. They even have a wizard to create a secure area within your webspace.

Setting up htaccess / htpasswd files is very easy to do. See below for a few links to help you set-up this method for yourself.

There are a number of Perl scripts that you can run on your server to make user registration and deletion far simpler. One that springs to mind is linked to below.

Alternatively we can create a private authorisation point for your Clan for a small one time fee of £20/$35. You can add and remove users as you see fit. Please email us if you would like to go down this route.
